Today I caught the eurostar from Paris to london..I don't have much to report from Paris. I turned up to do a 10am class with Royal Danish Ballet at palais garnier but the only person in the studio at that time was my friend Sharni, who is also over here on scholarship. We had both obviously been told the wrong time but we couldnt find anyone around so we just left, as class may not of been till later in the afternoon. I wasn't too worried..I ended up catching up on some much needed sleep instead.
I got into london at around 11am, checked in my hotel, got some lunch at St Ali which is a Melbourne cafe that now has a cafe in Clerkenwell rd, here in London. It was full of Aussies and new zealanders..I had Aussies sitting on one side of me and nzers on the other.
I then made my way to London Coliseum to see English National Ballet perform " Strictly Gershwin" matinee show.
This show was "a dazzling celebration of George and Ira Gershwin and the sparkling age of Hollywood musicals" It combined ballet, tap, ballroom and jazz with 100 dancers, guest singers and a live jazz orchestra playing on stage, with the wonderful, vivacious conducter Gareth Valentine, who pulled out a few dance moves himself.
I thought it was a fantastic show and very different to everything else I have seen on this trip. The choreography and direction was by Derek Deane and really showed off all the different styles of the company's dancers, as well as showcasing some great talent of the 4 guest singers and tap dancers,Paul Robinson and Craig Scott.
I can see that this type of show would bring new audience members who would not necessarily have thought to attend a more traditional performance and then by seeing this show, would hopefully return to see more works by the company.
With every show I have seen of each company I have always said that I would of liked to have seen another show by the same company, whether it be a more classical work or more contemporary work, to see the diversity of the companies repetoire but alas, there is not enough time.
